My Girls make great Cover Girls!

Did you know?

Ghost stories are common throughout the year, but especially on Halloween. Most cultures and civilizations contain some sort of stories about spirits, many of whom return from the dead to haunt people and places. Signs of a haunting include noises, odors, breezes and displaced objects.
Costumes were first worn to tell each other’s fortunes and for protection against evil spirits. The first costumes in Ireland were made of animal heads and skins. Modern Halloween costumes now include everything from superheroes and villains to princesses and furry animals.
Trick-or-treating for candy and prizes is a common tradition in the United States. A predecessor of trick-or-treating is a Scottish and Irish practice called “Guising,” where children went from door to door in costumes collecting coins and food. Children would only receive the prize if they did a “trick” such as song or dance, before the treat was given.
One quarter of all of the candy sold in the United States every year is purchased specifically for Halloween. According to the National Confectioner’s Association, a majority of all candy given out on Halloween is chocolate. Three out of every 10 individuals will pass out lollipops or other hard candy.

Spooky Recipe to Try

Blueberry Rickety Eyeball

Punch

Total: 1 hr 10 min
Prep: 10 min
Inactive: 1 hr
Yield: 6 to 8 servings
Level: Easy
12 to 24 fresh blueberries
12 canned lychees in syrup, drained, plus 5 to 6 tablespoons syrup from the can
3 cups blueberry juice cocktail
1/3 cup freshly squeezed lime juice (about 4 limes)
2 cups sparkling water
Ice

Directions:

Stick 1 to 2 blueberries, depending on
their size, into the cavity of each
lychee. Place on a foil-lined baking sheet and freeze, about 1 hour. (Wait until the “eyeballs” thaw a bit before eating, so that you don’t choke on them.)
Stir together 5 tablespoons of the
lychee syrup, the blueberry juice and lime juice in a bowl or pitcher until
combined. Stir in the sparkling water and add the lychee eyeballs. If it is a bit tart for your taste, add the remaining tablespoon syrup.
Serve in tall glasses over ice, spooning the lychee eyeballs into the glasses as you pour.
